Horizon Curriculum

The majority of students in Horizon are taught the mainstream curriculum in their Horizon class group with high adult to student ratios. Subjects are generally taught by mainstream teachers that hold the relevant subject specialism.  However, social and communication, Science at KS3 and English are usually taught by base teachers.

There is the option to access mainstream classes in individual subjects for those students in Horizon that can benefit from this.  There are a small number of students that are taught predominately in mainstream classes, returning to base classes for some areas.

The Horizon taught curriculum is made up of the following elements:

Social and Communicative Curriculum:

The specialist base provides small group teaching with high levels of adult support in the areas of social and communicative curriculum for up to 6 hours each week; this course also delivers Personal, Social, Health and Careers education as well as RS.  Topic work is also included to support social and communication objectives.

At Key Stage 3, students follow the social and communicative curriculum as described above.  They also follow the mainstream secondary curriculum that consists of the following subjects:

  • English, Mathematics, Science, Geography, History, Art, Drama, Music, Technology, PE and/or Occupational Therapy advised activities.

The curriculum is delivered through:

  • Horizon class groups, either within the base or in specialist subject facilities OR
  • mainstream classes with shared support where this is beneficial to the  individual.  Modern Languages can also be accessed through this route.

At Key Stage 4, students follow the social and commuicative curriculum.  They also follow the mainstream secondary curriculum that consists of the following subjects:

English (Language and aspects of Literature), Mathematics, Science (Combined double GCSE or separate Biology, Chemistry and Physics GCSEs through mainstream classes), PE and/or Occupational Therapy advised activities plus two additional option GCSE or Vocational subjects (eg BTEC courses) and The Prince's Trust.

The curriculum is delivered either through:

  • Horizon class groups, either within the base or in specialist subject facilities OR
  • mainstream classes with shared support where this is beneficial to the  individual.  Modern Languages can also be accessed through this route.

In addition, there is the potential for replacing elements of the social and communicative curriculum with additional mainstream option subjects at Key Stage 4 where this delivers better outcomes, and where needs in the social and communicative area have reduced.
