World Book Day

We have had a wonderful week of World Book Day events!

On Monday, the library held a book themed cake sale. Students brought in some incredible creations with cakes based on Harry Potter, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Never Ending Story and The Cat in the Hat to name a few. The sale was a huge hit with students and staff and raised over £100 which will be used for library resources and a charity donation.

Tuesday, we had a Warhammer painting workshop after school which proved very popular.

On Wednesday, students could pick up a template to make their own comic strip, and enter the competition to win prizes, very kindly donated by Forbidden Planet in Croydon.

Thursday, of course, was World Book Day itself! Year 7 and 8 students were able to dress as their favourite book character and we saw some very interesting outfits. We had representation from the Heartstopper series, A Good Girl's Guide to Murder, The Boy in the Dress, Demonslayer and various Football Heroes.

Staff entered into the spirit of the day. The Senior Leadership Team dressed in Harry Potter themed outfits, the Maths department were, collectively, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, the Science department dressed as Where's Wally. Thing 1 and Thing 2 from The Cat in the Hat were getting into mischief around the building, and our librarian was the loveliest Hobbit!

As part of the day's events, representatives from Forbidden Planet in Croydon brought books for students to purchase and spent the day in the library. Graphic novels and Manga volumes are hugely popular with our students and they were able to sign up for a special talk about comics in period 5.

On Friday lunchtime, as a gentle cool down after the fun on Thursday, students could pick up a poem chosen for them by the Student Librarians. There was also the chance to collect a free good luck charm for the first 100 visitors! World Book Day book vouchers have been available all week for students to take to participating shops and collect a free WBD book.

All in all, it's been a brilliant week celebrating books and reading. Have a look at the gallery for all of the cake and costume pictures.
